Useful Information Regarding Pull Type Spreaders

By Walter Russell

The modern market is filled several different types of spreaders that people can use to apply granular materials such as seed, fertilizer, and salt on the ground. Good examples of the different kinds of spreaders are push, pull-behind, and hand-held spreaders. The pull-behind spreader is a very great option for people who have large areas of land to cover. On the other hand, hand-held models are usually small in size and are only suitable for small lawns. Here are facts regarding Pull type spreaders.

Push spreaders are better than hand-held models, but they are not particularly suited for large areas. Pushing the equipment for a long time can be very tiring. Pull-behind models are the best because they are usually fixed on tractors, which pull them behind. This makes them convenient and capable of being used on large pieces of land.

There are two main classes of push spreaders, that is, drop and broadcast models. A spinning fan mechanism is normally built into tow behind broadcast models. It helps to shoot the material contained in the hopper in a circular spray sequence as the equipment gets pulled ahead. The material is assured to be distributed consistently on the lawn by the broadcast pattern. Seed, fertilizer and ice-melt are some examples of materials that can be applied by use of pull-behind models.

The work of a drop spreader is dropping the materials on the lawn from the hopper. Drop spreader is more beneficial than the broadcast model. This is because they give more accuracy in the spreading of materials. Broadcast models can result in causing much wastage since they apply materials over a huge area. This wastage result from spreading the material in areas it is not supposed to be applied.

When using the broadcast spreader, materials are applied beyond the area where the machine moves. This makes it difficult to prevent the fertilizer or seed from getting into ponds or flower beds in case they are located near where the machine is moving. One should therefore use the drop style model in such a case because they apply materials only in areas the spreader moves.

When buying a spreader, it is very important to pay close attention to the material that it is made out of. The material that the product is made of highly determines its durability. The material should be able to offer adequate resistance to corrosion and weather elements. A good sign that the device will not get damaged by the elements of weather is the presence of an enclosed gear-box.

The hitch that the equipment comes with should be compatible with the ATV, mower, or tractor that one intends to use. Different companies make different hitches. That is why one must ensure that the spreader they choose has the right hitch for their tractors, ATV, or mower. The spreader controls should also be located in a place where one can reach them easily from the tractor when driving.

Even if a spreader is of the right material, the kind of care that one provides it with will determine how long it lasts. For instance, after applying material such as ice-melt, it is important to clean the whole device thoroughly. Some materials have a corrosive effect and can reduce the lifespan of the device significantly.
