Essential Facts About Florida Artificial Turf

By Donna Murphy

Another name that is commonly used to refer to artificial turf is fake or synthetic grass/turf. This is a product that is manufactured in a factory setting. After manufacturing, it is then transported to the designated site of use. It is mostly used in places where natural grass has a problem to grow and is hard to maintain. This is worth knowing about Florida artificial turf.

This product is very tough, which allows it to withstand a high level of frequent use without undergoing significant degradation. This is a quality that has allowed the product to find a lot of use in sports arenas and stadiums. It has grown a lot in popularity allowing for its use in other spaces such as playgrounds, golf courses, and private lawns.

There is a long history associated with this product. The first instance when the product was produced and marketed was in early 1960s. Chemstrand Company refers to the company that brought the product to the market. This company later came to be renamed Monsanto Textiles Company. The production technique for the product is similar to the production of carpets. However, the design specifications for fake grass make it tougher and increases its durability contrary to rugs and carpets.

The early 1960s saw these products being produced using basic production practices with the use of inferior materials. As time progressed, the products have seen more investments, creating way for better production methods and materials. Today, the materials used have advanced a lot, allowing them to keep up with extensive use to which the products are put. The product is available in various grades for buyers to buy based on their needs.

UV damage has been a major problem in first and second generation products. However, that problem has been solved in modern products because they are treated with chemicals that protect against UV damage. Tear and wear caused by friction has also be lowered through the use of better quality materials. Abrasion in these products has also be lowered a lot, something that has resulted in lesser instances of injuries to athletes.

Similar to carpets and rugs, fake grass also has a backing and the upper feathery part, which makes the blades of grass. The backing on these products is made from the same material as the material used to make backings of carpets. Some of the materials used to make low quality products include jute, polyester, and plastic. On the contrary, high-quality products have polyester tire cord making the backing.

The blades in these products are made using various materials such as polypropylene and nylon. Different methods exist for making the nylon blades. In one method, the blades may be made in the form of thin sheets that are cut to make strips. In another method, the blades may be produced through molding for form blades with an oval or round cross-section. Extruded blades usually have a more natural feel than those that are made from thin sheets.

To make transportation easier, the fake grass has to be rolled in a similar manner as natural turf. It is important to conduct site preparation in advance before delivery of the product. For small projects, one may undertake the job by themselves. However, large projects should be reserved for professional contractors.
