Facts About Black Bamboo Plants In Pots

By Mattie Knight

Black bamboo is scientifically known as Phyllostachys nigra. It is a flowering plant belonging to the subfamily of Poaceae grass. The native origin of the plant is a Chinese province called Hunan. Predominance was initially restricted in China, but that is no longer the case. Today, black bamboo plants in pots are common almost everywhere in the world.

The rate of growth of the plant is very low. Reaching full size takes a really long time. The long time needed to achieve maturation is one of the reasons it is convenient for containers. It stands at five meters high when fully grown. Its slender and long leaves spread out scarcely. Before maturation is attained, it should be transplanted into the ground. The decision as when to transplant to the final location is personal.

The plant is preferred because it has several desirable and beneficial features that many people want. The various benefits it offers is one among the reasons many people like it. Besides being planted, the tree can also grow on its own without human influence. When this happens, it is usually described as invasive and spreads to other areas very fast as it kills other plants.

Bamboo has many benefits including shade, fuel, privacy, food, protection against strong winds, security, and timber. Natives in Asia have been and continue to eat the plant as food. Timber derived from the canes may be used to construct products like musical instruments, flooring products, and furniture. The canes can be used as fuel to warm spaces during cold winter seasons or to cook food.

Plants naturally derive nutrients and water from the soil, but those grown in containers need to be supplied with those nutrients. They die if that is not done. The soil in which black bamboos are planted must be slightly acidic and fertile. Fertility and acidic can be boosted by applying artificial products. However, care should be exercised not to exceed the required acidity level. The high resistance of Phyllostachys nigra to drought makes daily watering unnecessary.

The size of the pot should be big and should be chosen keeping in mind that the canes will continue growing. Small pots may need to be changed often, which may cause disruption to the normal growth of the plant. The container needs to be strong and durable. It has to be able to withstand damage that may be inflicted by elements of weather such as rainfall, frost, sunshine, wind, and ice among others.

Drainage should be ensured by making holes underneath the container so that excess water can be drained. Conditions provided in pots are much better because of porosity. Porosity ensures proper aeration so that oxygen is never lacking in the soil. It also prevents water-logging.

Watering is the only major requirement for potted plants after soil issues have been solved. Water should be applied in the morning or evenings when the weather is cool and does not have to be daily. Guidance on how to offer care can be asked from any company that produces and distributes the plant.
