The first sign is when you have some bald spots on your land. These are patches on the land where there is no greenery or trees that have grown. In most cases, the soil is eroded. You may even come across a soul buildup that has no plants growing on it.

You should also know that soil is washed away when you notice rocks on the surface. Basically, rocks are supposed to remain beneath the soil. If the land is in the right condition, the rocks should never appear on the soil surface.

You should also take the right action in case you notice roots of some plants exposed. In most cases, small plants are mostly affected since even minor washing away of soil can expose their roots. However, in case of serious washing away of soil, even the roots of big trees may be exposed.

Once you notice that your soil is being eroded, the best thing to do is to take quick action to prevent it. There are different ways in which you can prevent the soil from being eroded. One of these ways is by planting shrubs and grass. In most cases, water and wind sweep away bare soil. Plants will hold soil together preventing further carrying of the soil.

The other technique that you can use is mulching your land. Mulching the rocky areas can help preserve moisture and prevent the force at which rain drops hit the ground. In case you have planted plants that can hold soil together, you will not require applying mulch.

You should ensure that you have the right drainage. Ensure that your buildings have enough pipes and gutters to drain water in the right way from your garden to the collection points. If there is no right drainage, heavy rain might wash the whole topsoil layer. In case your area has heavy runoff of water, consider investing on underground drainage pipes.

You should also avoid overwatering your land. This is because the water erodes the soil very fast. If possible, use little water or invest in drip irrigation. Drip system delivers little amount of water, ensuring that there is no flooding that carries the topsoil.
