By George Stevens

So many people are looking for exciting new colors and flowers that they can add to their garden or yard, but it can be hard to find the right plants for the job. Liriope is just one of the many popular ornamental grasses and perennials groundcovers that are out there. This particular genus of low-growing plant comes out of South and Southeast Asia, and beautiful flowers bloom on it every year, which is the reason why so many people are now choosing this particular genus.

The Greek god Narcissus who was known for falling in love with his own reflection and drowning because of it is well-known by many people today. What fewer people know is that his mother was called Liriope, and she was a beautiful nymph who was born of the spirits of the river. It is from this mythical figure that liriope grass gets its name from.

It is hard to find two people who say liriope the same way. Most botanical experts will be able to understand what type of plant is being referred to since there so many different pronunciations as well as different names. Some people call in monkey or spider grass, while others simply call it lilyturf. This is in spite of the fact that this plant is not related to grass or lilies.

The time of year the liriope can be expected to start flowering is in the late summertime. The most commonly seen colors of their flowers are blue and purple, but there are many varieties out there nowadays. Some people choose to go with the more flashy options, such as silver and gold, which are now possible thanks to genetic engineering.

Going into a plant nursery is the very best way to find out more about which plants would be perfect for your lawn or garden. There is nothing like being able to see, smell, and touch the plant, and there are often numerous options to look through. Going online is also a great way to browse through all the options, but having an expert there with you is an invaluable benefit.

Some climates just don't support a wide variety of plants, especially ones that are fragile and not the hardiest of species. That is why it's important to make sure that the plant you're buying is suited for the particular climate. Ornamentals are a great pick because they tend to be able to survive in these harsher areas.

The main reason why people refer to these types of plants as grass is because that's what they look like. Scientifically speaking, they do not fall under the same classification as standard species of grass. Anything from cat-tails, rushes, to sedges are all not grass but look similar to it.

The fall and winter can be a very hard time for a lot of plants, and that is why many people avoid trying out different species for their yard. There are some ornamentals that have a lifespan of one year, but most of them simply go dormant when it gets too cold. This is thanks to their ingenious method of storing energy before that time comes.
