Information Regarding The Process Of Sod Installation

By Ruth Cooper

Basically, sod is just grass. The fact that it is not grown on grass is the main difference. The growing of sod is done on specific farms by farmers who are specialized. Specific farm equipment is normally used to harvest turf whenever it is ready. The equipment used normally cut sod into standardized regular sizes or squares. From there, they are rolled and transported to intended market for sale. Sod installation is done after that.

Fully grown and harvested sods are typically used for lawns, golf courses and sports stadiums. Some of it is sold to landscapers or home builders to be used in residential projects. Turf establishes a lawn quickly thus avoiding soil erosion. They can also use it to repair areas that erosion has already occurred or areas that have damaged lawn due to sporting activities such as sports fields.

Installation of sods is the process of laying turf in a required area. The process of installing sods requires a lot of concentration, focus and time. But first one has to consider certain factors before buying or installing turf in a particular area. A person needs to determine how much turf they need to buy. They can achieve this by measuring the area where the turf is to be placed.

Determining the type of grass is also important. This is determined by testing the soil of the area in order to ensure it is compatible with the turf It also reveals underlying issues that might affect the product when it is installed. Before buying turf one should also be clear on the best time to do it, otherwise it will not do well.

There are various steps taken before setting up the product. The first step is for one to prepare the soil. Turf has a shorter shelf life and therefore, the soil needs to be prepared earlier before it is installed. Removal of debris and weeds is one way of preparing the soil. Removal of the current lawn is also necessary. The purpose for this is to stop competition between the weeds and grass.

Sods are supposed to be installed in straight lines. This can be sidewalks or driveways. One should ensure that the edges are pushed together but not stretching the sod. That will discourage gaps in between. One should stagger the joints in each row. When trimming the sod, use a large machete or sharp knife. Blunt objects are discouraged because they destroy sods.

It is recommended that sods are supposed to be watered immediately after the installation. Watering the soils makes it wet and thus bond with grass firmly. To keep the soils moist, one has to water weekly continuously. That will maintain soft underfoot. Oozing is discouraged hence one is supposed to be careful.

Frequent maintenance care is required after the installation. The product is expected to be fertilized and mowed. Pests should also be controlled and done or conducted by recommended persons. Weeds also need to be controlled or may cause injury to newly placed sd. All this is to ensure that the grass stays healthy.
