Improving Your Chances With Disaster Survival Kit

By Stella Gay

Most disasters, whether they are man made or natural, are unpredictable in nature. This means that no one really knows for sure when a catastrophe will occur and the exact severity of its impact. This is why a disaster survival kit is such an important item.

Kits of this nature are ideal for individual as well as group usage. Families for instance, need to ensure that they have one or more kits for these emergency situations. Each member of the family should also be aware of the location of the kits and have access to them.

One of the primary items for inclusion in kits of this nature is first aid equipment. This includes items such as band aids, dressings for cuts and bruises and rubbing alcohol. For many catastrophes, official aid teams are unable to access the severely affected areas immediately. This is why first aid items are important. They can be used to help the injured until official help arrives.

Health concerns may emerge or escalate in the wake of a traumatic event. This is why medications such as pumps for those who have asthma should be included in any emergency package. It is important that each family or individual does an analysis of the health needs that are likely to arise and include the required medications.

Among the essential items for these kits are food and water. During times of turmoil brought about by disasters, survival items such as food and water may become scarce. In many cases, the suffering that people experience after the event is compounded by challenges faced as they try to access food and water. In fact, some disasters compromise the safety of water and food. When people consume food or water that is unsafe, other complications arise, sometimes resulting in death. Experts advise therefore, that people have enough food and water to last for between a few days to a week in the event that aid takes that long to arrive.

Tools that help people with mobility in times when amenities such as electricity are nonexistent should also form a part of any such kit. This means items such as flashlights and batteries are necessities for these times. Alternate lighting sources become important when the power is out and people need to move around at night.

Another crucial category of item for inclusion in the kits is those set of items that facilitate movement. Chief among these is a flashlight and the required batteries. In the wake of many disastrous events the power goes out. Alternative lighting sources will become important especially during the nights when the darkness can be a cause for concern.

The video and photographic footage from disasters in various countries over the years should serve as reminders of the importance of preparedness. Even though predicting most disasters is impossible, preparing to deal with them is within the control of the individual. Those who prepare stand a greater chance of surviving should the unthinkable happen.
