Great Indoor Gardening Ideas To Bring Green Inside During Cold Winter Months

By Laura Hall

Winter months can be long and depressing for dedicated gardeners. Some of them count the days until the ground is thawed, and they can begin to plant. There is an alternative to the long wait however. You can enjoy gardening all year round if you are a little creative and implement one of the many indoor gardening ideas out there. Whether you are a seasoned gardener or a newcomer to the hobby you can have green and growing plants whatever the temperature.

If you love fresh herbs but don't like to pay the grocery store prices, you can have a great herb garden right in your home with just a little imagination, time, and some basic tools. Inexpensive shelving is easy to install on an interior wall that gets regular sun. You can add towel racks to your design if so desired.

There are great ways to repurpose old dressers and taking the drawers out and using them for planters is one of them. You can repaint or strip and varnish the old drawer, replacing the hardware if it suits you. A couple of holes need to be drilled into the bottom of the drawer so water can drain. Once that is done, plant some of your favorite flowers or start your plants from seeds. All it needs is a sunny spot and sturdy stand.

You may or may not be familiar with kokedamas, but they are great green ideas for those with limited space. These are actually Japanese bonsais. The little plants root in a mixture of balled moss and soil wrapped in an intricate string web. You may have to experiment, but once you get the knack, you can hang the established plants in windows or from ceilings.

If you want to start with a smaller project, you could make your own terrarium with some plants, soil, rocks, and an old glass teapot. Only certain plants, with shallow root systems, will work. Choosing something colorful will add interest to your project.

If you are a wine drinker, you have probably thought you should do something creative with the empty bottles. It is not hard to turn them into interesting plant holders with a little ingenuity. You will need a glass cutter to cut the bottles in two sections. After sanding the cut edges smooth, invert the top part into the bottom. This will become your basic planter.

If you are feeling ambitious, you might try your hand at a hanging planter. You need to purchase or construct a box, and use fiberglass screen and chicken wire to contain the soil. Add chains and hangers to the ceiling or wall. The bathroom is a virtual rain forest, and these plants will flourish in this humid environment. You might even try planting some exotic succulents and adding some jungle touches to your room design.

It is possible to enjoy plants and gardens all year round. You just need some imagination. Gardening indoors may not be as satisfying as digging in the dirt outside, but can be a good substitute until spring arrives.
