Types And Uses Of Rubber Gaskets

By Elaine Guthrie

There are millions of commodities that come in numerous sizes and designs. Rubber gaskets are among the most important devices out there, and its material may either be synthetic or natural in origin. During manufacturing, the devices are configured as simple or complex rubbers. This material has some degree of give that makes it difficult to distort and also ensures that the gaskets fall in assigned spaces.

Manufacturing industries are both producers and utilizers of these devices. One of the most common functions is covering or shielding various materials from mechanical and other environmental hazards such as water and moisture. Among the industries with a huge demand for this commodity are military, aerospace, automobile, and electronics. Gaskets are known to form tight seals preventing escape of pressure and liquids.

An o ring is a similar device which is often confused with rubber gasket. This is because they share the same material, but differences can be noted in on their purposes. The o rings, as the name indicates, are usually in ring form. Despite the differences, these items are both reliable and durable in their role of sealing pressure. An o ring is very handy where gasket resistance can suffice.

Their application needs prior consideration. This is to choose the right device for a given application among other account to choose from. This is because this gasket presents themselves in numerous types where they share similar features and can handle several function.

The spiral wound gasket is a type made from a combination of plastic and metal. It can withstand high temperatures and extreme pressure. A corrugated metal core is found in the kammprofile gasket which has malleable sealing on both sides. These also ensure that tight seals cover edges as well as maintain a strong tensile core and flexibility.

An elestagrapgh is another type that is highly dense and is mostly applied in sealing and providing low seating stress. A laminated gasket, on the other hand, has several enclosed envelops. Some of materials needing their application are power cables and fiber optics, among other electrical insulated wires and gadgets. Other examples of gaskets include the fiber seal, ring and foam. Most are made from rubber and plastic. The rubber used in their production includes hypalon and neoprene while the plastics include polyurethane and nylon.

With progress in technology, these materials continue to be modified for improvement. The inner compression is so advanced as to allow a higher flange to prevent failure of the entire device. The outer ring is not left behind. The current outer installation serves as compression inhibitors. They have been improvised to become double jackets which compensate for each other in case one fails.

Proper handling is required during installation. Uneven pressure has been known to originate from human error and an asymmetrical connection which results in the leakage of gas and liquid during transportation. Uneven force originates from improper arrangement of the density bolt. Smooth surfaces are necessary to ensure minimal friction as a rough surface can bring about leakage.
